A Concert for “Een Häerz fir Kriibskrank Kanner”
As the sun went down and the temperature dropped on a cold February evening, Serve the City volunteers arrived at the Salle Scheiss to help kids cancer charity, ‘Een Häerz fir kriibskrank Kanner’, with a Jazz concert to mark International Childhood Cancer Day.
Our jobs for the evening were to welcome guests, provide a cloakroom service, serve cremant and nibbles, and clear up afterwards. Whilst this is not our usual activity, Serve the City are embarking on a longer term relationship with the charity and wanted to support them on this important event to help raise funds and raise awareness of those working hard to help children with cancer. All around the room were photographs of the children they have been helping, part of an exhibition by a Luxembourg based photographer, and these really helped to illustrate both the vulnerability and strength of character of these kids. We felt honoured to be able to start the relationship going and hope to meet some of the children very soon.
The ladies who volunteered that night have been invited to visit the childrens’ centre to see the work the charity does and to identify areas where they might be able to offer future voluntary assistance. In addition we will be planning some wider activities with the children and families themselves, details of which will be launched later in the spring.
If anyone has a wish to visit the centre with a view to volunteering, please email julia@servethecity.lu in the first instance and we’ll do our best to arrange this for you.
