Beauty, bikes and clothes – the 4th May Volunteer Day
We had our biggest Volunteer Day yet on Saturday, when 32 of us headed out together to serve people in need in Luxembourg. It was a great afternoon.
It was a privilege to get to partner with local ASBL Fondation Maison de la Porte Ouverte at their Foyers for vulnerable women and children in Luxembourg.
I spent the afternoon looking after children while their moms got pampered. It was a pleasure to be part of this wonderful project, to contribute to our community, be there for people in need via social interactions to feel that we care about each other and we are all one group.

Our volunteers ran an afternoon of beauty and pampering for a dozen women at one of FMPO’s Foyers. They enjoyed make-up tutorials, hand and back massages and manicures. As our beautician, Natasha, told the women: “You are beautiful! The make-up is only to enhance the beauty you already have!” The afternoon ended with a photo shoot for the women and their children.
To allow the mothers to enjoy a relaxed afternoon of pampering, our volunteers cared for their children, making “sock octopuses” and enjoying the sunshine with games in the garden.
Over at another of FMPOs Foyers, four handy volunteers spent the afternoon fixing and cleaning the bikes owned by FMPO, with enthusiastic support from the children there who were eager to help!
At the same time, the big piles of clothes that have been generously donated to FMPO were carefully sorted by our most organised volunteers into gender and age categories. This will make it much easier for the staff to find what they need for new residents.
“Once again a great opportunity to serve. I met with [homeless] friends at Bonnevoie and learnt many lessons again. Would love to do this time and time again.”
– Olatunde
“Amazing to spend time serving and chatting with those who society often forgets. You’re doing great work.”
– Felicity
The rest of our volunteers spent another afternoon meeting with the Homeless in Luxembourg. People who are used to being walked by countless times a day got to enjoy sandwiches, coffee and conversation with our volunteers, who took the time to stop and get to know them and their needs.
A big thank you to all the Serve the City volunteers who came out and served on Saturday! Your compassion and enthusiasm and hard work is inspiring to us.
