European Forum: Building Bridges and Fostering Unity

From October 17-20, 2024, volunteers, leaders, and changemakers from across Europe gathered in Berlin for the Serve the City International Forum. This year’s theme, “Building Bridges”, resonated deeply in a city once divided by walls, now a symbol of unity, transformation, and hope.

The forum kicked-off with a warm welcome dinner, followed by hands-on projects at a refugee shelter in Tempelhofer Feld, a historic site that once served as a major airport and played a crucial role in the 1948-49 Berlin Airlift. Participants engaged in cleanup, decoration, and installing street signs, making a tangible difference in the community. Expert-led workshops and networking sessions allowed attendees to share ideas and best practices. Nicolas Duprey, Serve the City Luxembourg Director, reflected, “In a world that can sometimes feel so divided, it was a powerful reminder of how much compassion and connection really matter.”

First-time attendee, Florent, shared his enthusiasm: “Good vibes resonated throughout the forum! Members believe in what they’re doing, showing energy and good mood despite common challenges.” He appreciated the personal connections and interactions, contrary to his expectations of technical workshops. Florent highlighted the diversity among local Serve the City chapters. “Each city is different, and each local STC finds its own way.” He noted, that discussing with members from various cities helps see what works better, what could be improved, and how others deal with common struggles. As Florent emphasized, “Being proactive and optimistic to bring about change is something people are looking for and willing to become part of.”

Next year’s 20th-anniversary celebration will take place in Brussels, promising another opportunity for Serve the City members to unite, share, and inspire. Join the movement. Serve the City.
